There was a time when theBalm was considered a luxurious, must-have brand — I still remember squealing with joy the first time I tried their iconic Mary-Lou highlighter. Recently, I got to know another cult favorite — their matte liquid lipstick Meet Matt(e) Hughes in the shade Committed — and let’s just say, this time my excitement was a little more restrained.
The packaging is exactly what you’d expect from theBalm — charmingly retro, straight out of the 1950s. The cardboard box is beautifully designed, and the tube itself features a sweet couple on the label. The transparent plastic feels sturdy and shows off the lovely shade inside — Committed, a warm dusty rose that’s perfect for everyday wear. The scent, however, was unexpected: a strong mint aroma that gives a cooling sensation on the lips right after application (thankfully, it fades as the formula dries).
The lipstick has a small, precise applicator and a mousse-like texture that feels light and velvety. It applies evenly without running, but here’s the golden rule — use it on moisturized lips and apply just one thin layer. Overdo it, and you’ll end up with that dreaded “clay effect” — cracking, sticking, and overall discomfort.
Its wear time is impressive — it easily survives a full meal and fades gracefully. Removing it, however, requires effort — only a bi-phase makeup remover or cleansing oil will do; micellar water doesn’t stand a chance. The good news: it doesn’t dry out the lips afterward. A lovely everyday nude with a vintage flair!
