Lately, NYX has been releasing some great new products that have rekindled my interest in the brand. One of my recent purchases is the Smushy Matte Lip Balm. The name sounds fun, but in reality, the experience was mixed.
The packaging is cute — a matte 8 ml tube with an unusual round cap. The formula contains rice powder (for the matte effect) and ceramides (for lip care).
The tube has a convenient applicator that allows you to apply a thin, even layer of balm.
I chose the shade SMB06 Soft Smile — a lovely nude with a caramel-brown undertone. The balm has a pleasant coconut-coffee scent that lingers for quite a while after application.
But let’s get to the main point — the texture of this matte balm. I was curious about it, too, and for me, it turned out to be a failure. The feeling is nice at first — as if you’ve applied a balm that suddenly became dry and silicone-like. That works fine for the clear version (yes, the line includes one), but with the tinted shades, it’s a problem: the pigment won’t distribute evenly. The balm doesn’t set, it slips around on the lips, and you constantly feel like pressing your lips together to fix it. Applied thinly, it looks acceptable, but if you try to build it up, you’ll end up with pigment only on half of your lips, while the other half looks bare.
On the care side, the balm does deliver — lips feel soft and nourished afterward. But the pigment performance is a complete fail. It comes off at the first sip of water, leaving traces everywhere your lips touch. The only plus is that it doesn’t bleed outside the lip line, but that doesn’t save it. I definitely wouldn’t recommend it, especially in the brighter shades.
